Have questions about your upcoming ultrasound? We've got answers.
Absolutely! Ultrasound is a safe and gentle imaging method that uses sound waves — not radiation — to create pictures. There have been no known harmful effects on people (including unborn babies) when performed by trained professionals.
Yes — for medico-legal reasons we do need a referral from your healthcare provider for all types of scans that we do. We will need your referral prior to your appointment.
Yes, all scans need to be booked in advance. We recommend making your appointment as soon as you receive your referral, as our schedule can fill up quickly.
Please let us know as soon as you can — preferably no less than 3 hours ahead — so we can offer your time to another patient. If you arrive more than 10 minutes late your appointment may be classed as missed. A fee of $50 per booking may apply for missed appointments or repeated late arrivals, applied at our discretion. See our non-attendance, late arrivals and cancellation policy for full details.
Please check our price list for details on scan costs. If you're unsure, our friendly team can help explain pricing when you book. Sometimes we may need your referral before an accurate quote can be given.
Yes, of course! You're welcome to bring support people with you however, due to the size of the room we just ask that you limit the numbers so that the room isn't too uncomfortable for you and the sonographer. Please remember this is a medical examination and the sonographer will need to concentrate. Please note this policy is subject to change at any time.
Sorry — filming and photography aren't allowed during scans for medico-legal reasons. We also ask that phones are silenced in the scan room.
When you book, our team will let you know if any preparation is needed — for example, drinking water or fasting. Following these instructions ensures your scan goes smoothly and on time.
You'll be welcomed into a warm, comfortable room. The sonographer will apply some warm gel to your skin and gently move a small handheld probe (called a transducer) over the area being scanned. You might be asked to change position or take a deep breath so we can get the clearest pictures. Most people find the process very easy and relaxed.
An internal (transvaginal) scan is only ever done with your consent. It's commonly used for pelvic scans because it gives the clearest view of the uterus and ovaries, and can be very helpful in assessing certain conditions during pregnancies especially in the early stages. Your sonographer will always explain why an internal scan might be recommended — and it's entirely your choice whether to go ahead.
Most scans take between 20-40 minutes, depending on what type you're having. If you are needing to know our team can give you a more specific idea when you book.
After your scan, the sonographer will prepare a detailed report which is checked and signed by our radiologist. We'll send the referring healthcare provider (doctor, midwife, physiotherapist or specialist) your report, usually the next day. If your referrer needs it urgently, or you'd like it sent to another healthcare professional, just let us know.
